A claim, not a derivative — the three jobs a tokenized share creates

Coinbase listed tokenized Nvidia, Meta, Apple and Alphabet shares on Base for non-US users. Each token is a direct claim on real stock held by Alpaca as a regulated broker-custodian, priced by Chainlink — and the token is the easy part. Reconciliation, corporate actions and market-data licensing are the jobs.

Not yet scoped — start with the failure list, not the architecture. For one tokenized share, enumerate every way on-chain supply and the custodian's share count can diverge (mint ahead of settlement, a failed purchase, a corporate action, a transfer restriction), and for each one name who notices, how fast, and what the holder sees in the meantime. Source: Coinbase tokenized equities on Base, announced 2026-08-25 — non-US users only, Alpaca as regulated broker-custodian, Chainlink price feeds, and a Base token standard referred to as B20. Every detail to confirm against the primary announcement.

Why

The load-bearing word is claim. A derivative tracks a price: it needs a counterparty, a margin model and a liquidation path, and the underlying never has to exist anywhere. A claim needs a share to actually exist, in a specific account, in a specific number, at every moment. That single word moves the problem out of financial engineering and into bookkeeping — and bookkeeping across two ledgers that settle at different speeds is the oldest unsolved operational problem in finance, not a new one crypto introduced.

The hiring signal from event-contract-plumbing repeats here with the nouns swapped. The people needed are not blockchain engineers. They are people who know custody reconciliation, corporate actions — splits, dividends, mergers, each of which changes a share count that a token contract has no idea about — and market-data licensing. The third is the one that gets forgotten: a price shown to a user is a licensed product, and Chainlink being the feed does not make the licence question disappear. It relocates it.

B20 is the small detail worth remembering. A Base token standard re-cut for stablecoins and RWAs is the first visible case of the most-used token standard splitting to fit a product requirement rather than a technical one. Standards fragmenting under commercial pressure is a different phenomenon from standards competing on merit, and it is worth knowing the name of the first one.

How it works

What the token does, and what still happens somewhere else

Job On chain Off chain, and who owns it
Ownership record Token balance The custodian's share ledger — and that one is authoritative
Price Chainlink feed Exchange market data, licensed from the venue
Dividend Nothing in a token standard receives one Custodian receives it; the distribution path has to be built
Split or merger Supply must change to stay a true claim Corporate-action processing, largely manual across the industry
Redemption Burn Broker sells, cash settles days later
Eligibility Transfer restriction, geofence Jurisdiction test at onboarding — see the footnote below

Reconciliation is the product

Every row above is a place where the two ledgers can disagree, and the token holder cannot see the disagreement. The only real question a design has to answer is what happens in the gap: does the chain hold the claim in a pending state until the custodian confirms, or does it mint on trust and repair afterwards? The first is honest and slow, the second is fast and creates an exposure nobody prices. That choice is the whole architecture, and it is made before any contract is written.

The jurisdiction footnote

The listing is for non-US users, which is the same shape as every other constraint in this week's reading: the product did not change, the jurisdiction decided the category. Whether Korea sits inside that non-US perimeter is not stated anywhere public, and that ambiguity is itself the finding — see jurisdiction-decides-the-category.
